To prepare all you Arch Angels for Sunday’s concert at Crocodile Rock in Allentown on Sunday, March 1, here’s a transcript of my interview with “American Idol” runner-up David Archuleta:

Archuleta1

Are you really as nice as you are on TV? Do you ever have bad times?
“Oh, [LAUGHS] Not, not really. No. What do you mean?”
“I guess so. I guess that’s just the way my parents just raise me, I don’t know. That’s kind of an awkward question. I guess that is the way I act. I don’ know how to answer that.”
“I try to be nice to people, especially if it's the first time you're meeting them or the only time you're meeting them, the first impression really matters to them. Because I think they fell like they know you soo much from the show, especially. When you're meeting with fans and stuff, it's important to them even though sometimes you might be tired and think, 'Oh man, so many people in one day.' I mean, the first person's not really any different from the last person you talk to in the day. It's meaningful to them. It may be like the 100th person to you but it's still their first experience meeting you and they're so excited. They're just as excited as the first person. I guess you just have to keep that in mind, and I think that helps keep your energy up. And when you think about that you stay excited to meet them, because they want to meet you. I don't know.” [LAUGHS]

Here's the other thing I needed to tell you: You absolutely should have won "American Idol."
[LAUGHS]"Oh no! Oh thanks, but I don't really mind at all. I'm totally fine with it and I thought Cook deserved to win. I thought he was a great example of an American Idol. Because it's not just about the singing and stuff - I think it's about the person, too, and I think he's just a great guy. I didn't mind at all. It's not like I was planning on making it to the finale anyway. So I was just happy to be there."

You've turned 18 now. Do you have your driver's license yet?
"Oh, I've had my license for like two years. I got mine before the whole American Idol experience."

What did your experience with "American Idol" and your success since make you miss? You've missed your high school graduation, right?
"Oh, I haven't graduated yet, so I don't know if I missed it. But I'm missing out on all of what my friends are doing and stuff. You know, I get to see them when I go home."

Did you get to prom?
[DEJECTED]"No, I didn't. [LAUGHS]B ut that's OK. I actually got to go to another school dance last Archuleta2 month, so that was fun."

Was it more crowded than any other dance has ever been?
"No, I kept it really under wraps. I didn't tell anyone I was going until after I went. [LAUGHS]. Everyone was pretty much my age, so all the younger kids who didn't get to know me before the American Idol thing - most of the people in my grade and the grade under already kind of know. But it's the other kids - it's the sophomores this year that I didn't meet before this whole thing happened -- they're the ones who freak out, kinda, 'cause they didn't know me before. But the dance was fun."

Let me ask you about your album. What do you think of it, now that it's been out few months, and what might you have done differently?
"Under the circumstances, I'm happy how it came out. It was quite the experience with trying to do it on tour. I was trying to finish the album the same time I was on tour, and that wasn't like a whole lot of time, especially because I wasn't ever in one spot for very long - having a show almost every day for three months - I don't know how long. But it was interesting, that's for sure, and definitely not the way I expected to work on my first album. I thought, [in a sing-song voice] 'Oh, you know, I'm going to take my time and try and write songs for the year and see which ones are good.' But it was like 'No.' There was like no time to do any of that kind of stuff, so it was pretty crazy. But it was fun."

I read that you co-wrote five of the songs. How much input did you have? When you say "co-wrote," what does that mean, exactly?
"Well, only a couple of songs got on the main album, but there was a pre-order song that I helped write and I got really involved with that one. All the songs, the writers I worked with were really cool because they all were concerned about just me getting the most out of it. And all the songs that I was involved with were my ideas, like my concepts for the songs and it just depended on what songs and what writers I worked with because every writer's like a different experience, and I'd never really done that before. So it was cool just getting to see what it was like writing with other people and seeing how they do things differently. Like some of them I got more involved with the lyrics and then some of them I got more involved with the music. And then there's some that I got involved more with both. It just all depended really."

I saw you perform your song "Crush" on a couple of the TV shows with your band, and the song to me had a little harder, more rocking sound, and I really liked that harder treatment. Do you want to do more of that?
"I guess I've though more about more natural-sounding stuff in the future, 'cause that's the music I really like. I like that more just acoustic-sounding stuff, like my favorite artists, most of them are that - like Jason Mraz and John Mayer and Sara Bareilles and Adele - Adele, her album is my favorite right now. She's so good."
"I actually saw [Sara Bareilles] in New Orleans last weekend, so it was cool. I'm like 'Oh my gosh, I'm meeting Sara Bareilles.' 'Cause I just love her stuff."

What is your concert going to be like? Are you going to be playing with a band?
"We're having a band come. It's fun because now, with my tour, instead of just singing the songs the way - we get to do different things with them and try different twists with the songs - add a little something to them - and it's cool. I think it makes the songs more fun when you add little things to them, and it makes them different. The band has been really great, too, with trying to make it at least a little different from the album to give people who come to the show a little different experience from just listening to the album, and I think that's cool."

Seventeen Magazine said that you have not had your first kiss yet.
"Oh [LAUGHS]yeah, I'm not really involved a whole lot with girls right now. [LAUGHS]"Archuleta3

Is it very difficult with your time?
"Yeah, there's not really even time to watch TV or anything, so why get a girl in your life when that can make things even more complicated? [LAUGHS]You know, I don't know, I think it's just about waiting for the right time. Cause I think there are other things that I should be focusing on right now. It's not like I need a girlfriend. I think if there's a girl that I see and it's like, 'Oh man, this girl's really cool and stuff,' then maybe … I think you need a reason to have a girlfriend instead of just 'Oh, I need a girlfriend.' There needs to be a girl to give you a reason for you to want to have a girlfriend. So I'm waiting for that girl to come. And then if that girl comes, then maybe I'll be like, 'Oh well, hmmm.' I don't know. [LAUGHS]But right now it's just kind of like I'm not really looking. I feel like there's still quite a bit of time to worry about that."

What role does your dad have now? Is he on the tour?
"Yeah, he's going to come. He's co-managing."

Does it still bother you the criticism he received during "American Idol"?
"That was really annoying - just everyone like TMZ and stuff - just doing that kind of stuff. I just tried to ignore it because it's like I was in the competition. But then it got to the point where it was everyone was like, [voice deepens and gets serious] 'Oh, your dad - oh, he doesn't let you drink water.' I can't believe people - I think they think, 'Oh, it's a reality TV show, so something has to be dramatic, you know? Can't people accept reality sometimes in reality TV shows? [LAUGHS]It's like they want some kind of drama.

"After the show, people kind of died down 'cause I think they wanted something with the show. It's like they wanted some popcorn with the movie. But after the show ended, it kind of ended. And now it's fine - people don't really care anymore, and they're like, 'Oh, your dad's cool.' It's like, 'Yeah, I know.' But I couldn't really say anything on the show [LAUGHS.]

I saw that you were on "iCarly." How did you like that experience, and will you act again?
"Yeah! I loved that experience. It was so much fun working with them. They're just fun kids to be around, and everyone who worked there was just really cool. I just made a quick guest appearance, but it was so much fun. It really made me gain an interest in maybe doing some acting in the future. But I think I might need quite a bit more practice and experience with it [LAUGHS]. But taking classes or something, I wouldn't mind doing at all, because I just think it's just so much fun to do."

For your show, what songs are you going to do? Are you going to do Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles"?
"I don't know [LAUGHS]"

She's a native of this area.
"Oh really? Oh that's awesome. She's great - she makes great music."

My wife said that she'd like to hear you sing 'You're the Voice.'
"Oh really? [LAUGHS]Well, she might have to come see I guess then - see what happens. [LAUGHS]That's one of my favorite songs."

I loved that performance you did on the show. I think the judges were just totally wrong on that. I think you nailed that. When you sang that, I said to myself, 'Listen, the competition is over, he has one and everyone else is just going for second place.'
"Oh no! [LAUGHS]Oh man, well, thanks. Aw, thank you. I don't know if it was that kind of thing but thanks. I just love that song, it's such a great one. I don't sing it quite near to the part of John Farnham, 'cause he's just amazing. But I love that song, so I appreciate it, thanks."

Your CD has gone gold. Crush is nearing double platinum. How do you feel about it all?
"It's just really surprising to see how many people actually will buy your music. I mean now, in this world, everyone uses Limewire [a free music downloading site], it seems. [LAUGHS]But it's just good to know there are people who want to hear your music and are enjoying it, and it just means a lot, because you put a lot of work into that kind of stuff. So when people come up to you and just say, 'Hey, I just love the songs that you sing and I love the album,' or 'Crush,' or whatever song, it's cool."
