Is this guy for real?

The temperature of the Barrymore Theatre increased about 10 degrees when David Archuleta bounced on stage Friday night. The air was suddenly sticky with teen girl adrenaline and Bath & Body Works perfume. Cell phone screens glowed and blinked like fireflies in the stage rush. His first song was practically smothered by their hyperventilating shrieks.

Things settled down by the time the 18-year-old American Idol runner-up got into his second song, "Barriers." But he still followed it with a good-natured plea that the crowd not crush each other in excitement.

"If you could keep that in mind and not come forward too much," he asked the crowd, laughing and flopping his arms around (as he typically does). He followed almost everything he said with a little hiccup of a laugh, which is either adorable or eye-poppingly annoying, depending on your tolerance for boyish cuteness.

Archuleta's appeal is clear: he's truly wholesome and unselfconscious, not beaten down yet by cynicism. He told the sold-out crowd Friday night that he felt like he was getting sick, but was fighting it off by "eating healthy and taking my vitamins. Ha-ha!"

In an interview with Seventeen Magazine last summer, he confessed to never having been kissed and said if he wasn't a singer, he'd be an ear, nose and throat doctor. Aww. And the girl fashion trend that confuses him? "Those really short skirts."

Is this guy for real?

It appears he is. There really isn't any smarmy front with him. He's just that weirdly innocent. (But I'm with him on the really short skirt thing, if he's referring to those denim belts girls pull out every summer here. That is weird.)

In the one hour and 15 minute show, he bopped around the stage with admirable energy. He's got a strong voice and heartfelt (if sappy) delivery, only marred by his tendency to approach songs with the same timbre. He hits some ballads, like "Somebody Out There," with the same punches as his more upbeat songs.

After "My Hands," which the audience sang a capella and clapped along with him, he told everyone brightly, "Thanks for singing along. That was fun! Ha-ha!"

It's all squeaky, squeaky clean and cheery.

He clearly gets what his role is as a singer. He understands that simple songs with simple lyrics can have the most beauty and power and said as much before singing "You Can." It will be interesting to see if he grows up along with his fans or gets stuck in teenland.

It was fun to watch the preteens and young teens in the audience get so excited for him. Several fans brought handmade signs.

Kayla Ewoldt, 19, made a bunch of puffy-paint T-shirts in his honor and was hoping to pass a few out to kids after the show.

Her friend Nick Nolden, 22, was wearing one, but denied involvement in their creation. "Kayla's making them. I'm just here to drink the beer," he said.

In 10 years, this audience will laugh about how back in 2009, they were sooo obsessed with David Archuleta, just as today's 20- and 30-somethings laugh about how they swooned over New Kids On The Block back in 1990, today's 40-somethings got goo-goo eyed over the Partridge Family in the '70s and so on and so forth back to the '50s, when the concept of teenagedom was born.

Archuleta's opener, Irish singer Lesley Roy, has a deep and slightly smoky voice but can't quite muster the power for her power pop songs. She does get some interesting dissonant hooks going on "Unbeautiful," her single and the title track of her debut album, and she ended with a spirited chant-along of "Psycho Bitch." But, like Archuleta, most of her songs go in one ear and out the other.

After the show, an exalted and sated audience flowed out onto Atwood Avenue. A limo was even waiting for one lucky girl -- a Make-A-Wish Foundation recipient who even got to spend some time with Archuleta earlier in the day, the limo driver said.
