GLOBE Magazine March 16, 2009- THE BIG INTERVIEW- David Archuleta
At age 16, David Archuleta became a teen heartthrob while
finishing second to David Cook, now a close friend, on the seventh
season of the FOX talent show American Idol.
Now 18 years old and with a dedicated army of female fans called
Arch-Angels, Archuleta is embarking on the music career he’s dreamed of
since he appeared on Star Search at age 12.
In this interview with freelance journalist Andrew Williams,
Archuleta talks about staying grounded, wacky Paula Abdul and his
obsession with the Loch Ness monster!
Q: Did you see the clip on YouTube of the girls having a mental breakdown when you didn’t win American Idol?
A: I did! (laugh) David Cook showed it to me.
It’d be fun to meet up with them but I haven’t tracked them down. I’m
pretty sure they’re over it by now.
Q: What’s the craziest thing a fan’s done to meet you?
A: It’s happened a few times - a girl just walked
into our house! My brother just caught a girl in our kitchen. It freaks
my family out. That’s not a normal thing to do, to walk into someone’s
house. It’s disturbing and scary.
Q: Do they send you gifts in the mail?
A: Yes, I get a lot of stuff. I once got an
avocado slicer from a fan - i don’t know why! Another fan gave me a
sponge microphone and said “Whenever you want to sing in the shower
just pretend this is your real microphone.”
Q: What’s the best present you’ve gotten from a fan?
A: A donation to charity in my name, like cancer research. That’s really cool.
Q: Do they send you their underwear?
A: No. My fans, the Arch-Angels, are good about
keeping those to themselves! On the American Idol tour, David Cook got
some underwear thrown at him and he threw them at me during out group
number. I flipped out. I had this girl’s underwear on me. I was so
embarrassed. I keep my underwear to myself and girls should do the same.
Q: You’re a fan of Brit singer Robbie Williams, who’s really into aliens. Are you?
A: Not really, but when I was little I was so into cryptozoology. I was obsessed with the Loch Ness Monster!
Q: Your dad Jeff has been accused of being a pushy stage parent. Is that true?
A: No. You have to have a passion to do this. I can make my own choices. Music’s what I want to do. I’m having a great time.
Q: When you were on American Idol, did Paula Abdul seem out of control to you?
A: I never noticed. I was so dazed after my
performances I didn’t pay attention to what the judges said. One time
she said she wanted to squeeze my head off which confused me. But she’s
a really nice lady and always considerate to our feelings, I guess
because she was a performer herself back in the day.
Q: You are a Mormon. Does that restrict what you do?
A: I’m quite serious about my religion and my
friends know not to swear around me. I have fans of all ages. A lot of
people are watching what I do so I need to make sure I’m a good
example. I just want to keep it friendly for everyone.
Q: Do you think the pressure will get to you one day an
you’ll end up with substance abuse problems like Britney Spears or Amy
Winehouse?
A: I hope not! Negative peer pressure doesn’t help, but I have good values and family to keep me grounded.
