Archuleta, who was in town to perform at the Newport Music Hall, is affectionately known as Archie by his fans - the same fans who didn't care about missing school or making a long trek to Columbus to see the 18-year-old singer. One fan traveled from more than 4,000 miles away.

"I fell in love with him watching him sing 'Imagine' on YouTube," said the fan, who came from Cologne, Germany. She found out about the concert by talking to her friends from the United States and then decided to travel to Columbus.

Many of the fans in line already knew each other through snarkyarchies.com, a Web site where "Archy" fans can network and chat about their American idol.

"We have thousands of fans who meet on here," said Dana Larkey, administrator of the Web site.

Some fans lined up as early as 7:30 a.m. to get a better spot for general admission seating. By the afternoon, the line had already stretched more than a block down High Street, with some fans in tents and others in chairs.

Some were skipping school for the first time.

Emily Harmond, 14, of Huntington, W. Va., said she was skipping school for the first time since third grade.

"He signed my perfect attendance sheet last year," said Harmond.

Eric Snowden was less enthusiastic about the concert. The senior in history sat playing UNO with devoted and emotional fans. Snowden said he had been saving a seat for his mother's friend since noon. She agreed to pay him $150 dollars for his time, he said.

"I don't know anything about Archuleta; my motivations are cash," Snowden said.
