Former "American Idol" contestant David Archuleta performed at Newport
Music Hall Thursday night to a sold out crowd mostly composed of
adolescent females. After a delayed entrance, the teen heartthrob burst
onto the stage to an eruption of squeals and flashbulbs.
Archuleta
opened with "Touch My Hand" from his self-titled album. Although he
didn't literally touch any of his fans' hands, every girl in the front
row reached for the 18-year-old Honduran-American.
Archuleta's appearance was his second in Columbus since finishing second on "American Idol."
"It's awesome to be here in lovely Ohio," he said.
When
he let out an "O-H," the audience eagerly obliged with the appropriate
response. Archuleta said he wished he translate the chant to his home
state of Utah.
"U-T, never mind," he said.
Archuleta
bounced around on stage, singing songs from his album as well as a
medley of other contemporary songs. His song "Zero Gravity," released
recently during his current tour, was already well-known by the
energetic crowd. Archuleta was excited about the reaction.
"It's so much fun to see all of you guys jumping," he said.
The
smooth Archuleta, who looked liked he had just gotten off of a school
bus, received a shirt, towel and hat from fans who threw them on-stage.
The squeals got louder every time he pointed at the audience.
He
sang a medley of U2's "One Love," Sarah Bareilles' "Love Song" and
Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours." He also performed "American Idol" judge Kara
Dioguardi's song "To Be With You." Archuleta was to finish with his
first hit single "Crush," but he came out for a curtain call to a
chorus of cheers. He then finished on the keyboard with Vanessa
Carlton's "A Thousand Miles," which he said was the first song he
learned to play.
His stop in Columbus was the eighth of a 21
city tour that will conclude in his hometown of Salt Lake City, Utah,
before he goes on tour in the United Kingdom.
