David Archuleta's latest reading list could reveal something about the teenager.

"Jason Castro handed me 'The Exorcist' during 'American Idol' and said, 'You should read this,' " said Archuleta, 18, "I'm not much of a reader outside 'The Book of Mormon,' but I fell in love with it, and I really like the author's morals and the lessons he puts into his books."

"The Exorcist" has led to Archuleta's reading of "The Witch of Porto Bello" by Paulo Coelho, which he says is a "little more out there," but he's enjoying it.

Archuleta may be an immensely popular singer, thanks to the phenomenal viewership of "American Idol," but he's still a teenager.

He talks like one in an interview, a bit awkward and hesitant, not sure of his place in the spectrum of entertainment at this point but eager to secure it.

His choice of reading material, "The Witch of Porto Bello," is about gaining the courage to be true to one's self. It seems like the right subject for a young man who has found himself suddenly near the top of a particularly challenging and cutthroat industry. He had better have courage – a lot of it.

Archuleta makes his Reno debut Wednesday at the Grand Sierra, an early stop on his first solo tour after his obligatory "American Idol" tour and the release of his first album, "Crush." He visited from his Sony label offices, clearly excited about going on the road.

"It feels good where I am right now," he said. "I've got a few jitters before things start up, but we're going to have fun. We might have a few surprises for the audience.

"Most of the songs will be from my album, but there will be some songs I haven't performed before."

On "American Idol" last season, Archuleta was in the final showdown, "The Battle of the Davids," the title ultimately going to David Cook. Archuleta took second place, a spot that proved good for several past competitors. Archuleta's reaction is a combination of pragmatism and high school pep talk.

"I don't see anything wrong with coming in at No. 2 There are, after all, plenty of other places I could have come in. Cook's a great guy. People can really look up to him."

He adds some pop philosophy to match the pop music: "People should not give up just because they don't win. They need to follow up on what they love to do."

During "American Idol," Archuleta was the only competitor in the Top 12 still "doing school." He has yet to complete it – he's "doing stuff online" – but is finding it tough to balance career and education.

In both, he seems unsure, waiting to "see where I go in the future and find out what I want to do when I grow up."

Broadway, which has been a route for several "Idol" contestants, does not appeal to him, "but I've been asked a few times.

"I've never thought I am the type for Broadway, but never say 'never.' "

For now, he'll stick to "the more pop kind of stuff," taking some time during the tour to plan the next album, "which may be a Christmas album. We have to decide what would work the best."

It all has to be a bit overwhelming.

"It's cool to have fans, but I feel like I'm kind of embarrassed by it," Archuleta said. "I don't think I'm the kind of person to have fans. (Archuleta's fans, mostly female, call themselves "Archies" or "Arch-Angels.") They should be fans just for the music. I'm just a weird person who doesn't make sense half the time."

He's been diversifying. He made an appearance as himself on the Nickelodeon show "iCarly," playing a contestant on a singing show. He was grand marshal for a Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans. And he performed the national anthem at the NFL's recent Pro Bowl.

"That was great. I loved Hawaii. I felt a few jitters before singing, and I was surprised by the helicopters, which came while I was singing. It was nice and warm. I love warm."

Archuleta also wants his fans to remember some charities, his two favorites being the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Invisible Children, the latter providing relief to children in Uganda.

The opening act Wednesday will be Lesley Roy, who is a "label mate. I really like her music."

IF YOU GO

• David Archuleta performs at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Grand Sierra. Tickets are $25.30 at grandsierraresort.com. The showroom seats 2,000 and the stage is a full acre in size, a fact that stunned Archuleta when it came up in the conversation.

However, he liked the fact he'd be playing a stage that has hosted the likes of Frank Sinatra in the past, and he feels he and his four-piece band will handle the size well.

Archuleta fan-appropriate activities to accompany the concert would include a visit to Fun Quest, one of the area's largest and most popular arcades, located in the Grand Sierra. Fans might want to check out the retro diner Johnny Rocket's, just outside the showroom, known for its hamburgers, fries and '50s pop music in keeping with its slick, steely décor.
