The radio segment started with a little blurb by that glorious voice, “Hey this is David Archuleta. This is my song, Touch My Hand. Enjoy!”
The personal stereo system added a layer of richness and depth to his voice (as if he needed it!) on Touch My Hand and I was dancing and singing in my seat like a deranged, loony passenger with hormonal imbalance. The interview started after TMH, with Crush beautifully weaved in in-between, and ended with ALTNOY. I love how DJ Jean Danker introduced the interview, “If you’re an Archie, then you’re in for a treat”, as if a substantial part of the world population at random who fly Singapore Airlines are Archies, and that “Archies” is a commonly-known name for fans of David Archuleta. She then shared that David’s self-titled debut album charted at No. 2 on the billboard album charts upon release.
Transcript from interview with David Archuleta on Singapore Airlines:
On a typical day:
It’s pretty interesting. It’s not exactly like a typical schedule, because everyday changes. I’m not always home. But I got to spend time at home. It’s so nice. I’ve been on tour and it’s been so exciting and I love it. But you don’t realize how much you miss home until you’re actually there. It’s nice to be there, to relax, to have time to think about other things and spend that time with the family.
On his favorite songs on the album:
That changes. It just depends on what mood I’m in. Sometimes I like this song, another day I love this song. Right now I love You Can. It’s a really simple song with a universal message; it really hits a lot of people. Crush is another song – at some point in their lives when they [people] realize they’re starting to like someone, but they’re not sure what’s going on.
[Crush starts playing.]
Having been in the limelight since AI, on how he keeps himself grounded:
I think what keeps you grounded is to remember that it isn’t just about the fame and the money. Because what I’ve seen and learned is that even when you get there it’s not the best thing that can ever happen to you. Everyone tells you it’s the best thing that can happen to you. But you can see when all the people reach that point, it’s not what makes people happy; it makes them miserable! It’s the values that people keep with them that they had before they had fame – these are what make them successful, not just in people’s eyes but in their own eyes. [Also to] Remember the things family taught you. My beliefs are something that keeps me strong, remembering those simple things. Those simple things are what keep you go far.
On juggling musical career and school:
I love music so much. I will keep on doing it any way I can. I don’t know if I’m doing a career on it for the rest of my life. I love doing music so much, but not sure if I can make money out of it. [So] Make sure you have education. You don’t know what’s going to happen. You can’t go on living in lala land. There’s a lot more business side to things. You run your own business with this. Always make sure you have a back-up plan and you never know when it comes in handy. Being young, I don’t know where my life is going to go still. I still have a lot of life to live, so I make sure I have education and continue it, so I take time to do independent studies and stuff.
[ALTNOY starts playing.]
To my dismay, the interview ended all too soon when Jean Danker quipped, “Certainly hope you enjoy the little chit-chat with little David there.”
