David Archuleta enters a fan VIP meet and greet, flashes his sunbeam smile, then sits at a keyboard and sings. When someone asks for a song he's not sure he can play, Archuleta does it a capella. His soulful tenor, perfect pitch rendition is flawless.

To his fans, Archuleta is perfect - a magical singer they admire for his "heart." The 18-year-old from Utah has gone far since placing second on American Idol in 2008.

"I certainly don't see myself as perfect," he says. "I have my faults. There are plenty of them. I take longer to do things than most people. I forget things a lot. I'm clumsy. I spill my lunch. I think imperfections make us who we are. That's what makes us unique."

That, his fans say, is part of his charm. They admire his devotion to family. They donate to his charities - Rising Star Outreach, Lisa Lopes Foundation and Invisible Children - showcased on an umbrella Web site, angelsforacause.org. They even emulate his awkward, "Oh, my heck," on Twitter, rather than the more common "OMG."

It's the music, he says, that made it all possible. His self-titled debut album reached No. 2 on Billboard's Top 200, his single, "Crush," sold 1.9 million copies, and his tour hits venues large and small. In September he won an ALMA Award and he's currently writing and recording his highly anticipated second album.

To promote his latest release, Christmas from the Heart, Archuleta will appear in 19 cities from November 24 through December 20. The album reveals a more sophisticated performer, with the young singer tackling songs in four languages: "Pat-a-Pan" in French; "Riu, Riu, Chiu" in Spanish, "Ave Marie" in Latin; and traditional English hymns.

In New York, when we talked, Archuleta laughed uncomfortably after hearing a quote from 18-year-old fan Emily Brown. She and her sister, Elisabeth, 16, create Archuleta-adoring videos on YouTube.

"Last year I went through a really bad time, and I felt like having David by my side helped me get through it," Emily said.

Modest and appreciative, Archuleta turns to the music when the adulation gets heavy.

"Music has been a blessing in my life, so it's neat to know that being able to share music with other people can do something for them - that I'm not the only person benefiting from it," he says. "I think that's the point of music, being able to share, being able to communicate."

Archuleta does stardom reality checks regularly and relishes the ride with every step and stop. Every day, he tweets to almost 300,000 fans about his action-packed schedule.

"Man, I'm tired. But it's been a good day," he writes the evening after our interview, which included a Univision taping, a visit to a Harlem school and a John Mayer concert.

Fans hang on every blooper and stumble of Archuleta. A diverse lot, his fan base is made up of everyone from kids and teens to men and women from all walks of life.

Larissa Cheong, 27, a businesswoman from Singapore, has traveled to the U.S. three times and has plans for the Christmas tour. Holly Brown, 23, a college student who had never been out of Tennessee "before David," has now visited eight states. Susan Mathias, 53, a bookkeeper from California, has a daily report at the ready when her husband asks, "What did David do today?"

Ivan Guzman, 13, an Archuleta look-alike, watches his idol carefully. He's been taking music lessons since age 7, and after seeing Archuleta on American Idol and in person, dreams of being on Idol too.

"I like his style of music. He's a good role model. I relate to him," Guzman says.

Todd Pennington, 44, owner and editor of archuletafanscene.com, predicted the young singer's success early on. Archuleta was 13 when his parents asked Pennington to inject new life into their son's fan site. Later, Pennington invited Archuleta to perform at a Boys & Girls Club where he was social recreation director.

"I was impressed with the way he put the kids first. He wouldn't eat until the children ate. He insisted on serving them and helped us clean up afterwards," Pennington says.

Archuleta credits his broad and devoted fan base to factors other than his talent and charm. It's the music and American Idol, he says.

"A lot of people watch that show, and it's such a diverse audience. Families watch the show - all ages," he says. "I think people give music they normally wouldn't listen to a chance. It's also a great example of the idea that music doesn't have boundaries. I wouldn't want my music to be enjoyed only by one group."
