It was sort of a last minute whim when I picked up a ticket to check out David Archuleta’s Christmas concert at the House of Blues in Boston Saturday night (Dec 19).

The venue is only a few miles away from my house, plus I will admit to a fondness for Christmas music, especially the classics! And I managed to snag a front row balcony ticket at the list minute. Yay me!

The last time I saw David perform live was the 2008 Season 8 tour, and I’m happy to report that his performing skills have developed by leaps and bounds since then. He’s no longer rooted to the stage, gripping the mic with his eyes closed. During uptempo songs, he hops (literally!) and bops all across the stage. Even during some of the ballads, he works his performance space, making contact with his fans. And he looks super-comfortable as a performer.

Plus, he’s articulate and funny between numbers, using his adorakable charm to win the crowd over.

So, there I was with my camera last night, capturing all the action, when a security guard busted me just as song #3 got underway. He ordered me to put away my point-and-shoot because it was “too professional”. What? Meanwhile, I could see a ton of cameras on the floor, and have no doubt there were peeps happily videoing away, with cameras better than mine. Grrr. After awhile, I started sneaking some vids. In all, I captured 9 songs, mostly from his Christmas set.

The first half of the show featured material from David’s debut album, and a couple of covers. Sting’s “Fields of Gold”, with just an acoustic guitar, was nicely done. There was the joyful, and animated “Zero Gravity”, and the singles, “A Little Too Not Over You” and “Crush”. David sat at the piano to perform a lovely “Riddle”. “Prayer for the Children”, ended the first half, with David talking up the pleasures of charitable giving.

A dressier David, in suit coat and tie was joined on stage by a string quartet for the Christmas half of the show “Is everybody ready for Christmas!” he asked the enthusiastic crowd, that included entire families and their (screaming!) kids.

David opened with the contemporary, “Melodies of Christmas”, followed by traditional fare, with a couple of international tunes–the French “Pat a Pan” and Spanish “Riu Chiu” thrown in for extra flavor. While the set, festooned with Christmas trees and snow men, was decidedly secular, David was unabashed about his faith in Christ without clobbering peeps over the head with it.

And the singing–that rich soulful voice was able to soar on classics like “Ave Maria”, “Silent Night”, “What Child is This” and the encore, “Oh Holy Night” Bonus: Watching David bop-out to “Feliz Navidad”. Hee!
