You know that tingly feeling you get when you witness something so amazing that you just want to throw your cares out the window and jump for joy?

As I gazed at the dazzling outdoor ambience of the San Diego County Fair while 18-year-old international pop star David Archuleta serenaded concert-goers with “To be With You,” well… I got that feeling.

After a whirlwind day of fun with friends and games of “Let’s try to meet David before the concert without the security guard calling the Sheriff,” it was finally time for the show! I had been standing and walking for five hours straight and the effects of my athleticism coupled with the unhealthy delicacies I had sampled earlier in the day were finally taking their toll. Once the doors opened, I limped into the stands, exhausted and in desperate need of a chair.

Little did I know that I would be sitting down to see the best concert of my life.

As soon as David walked onto the stage, the sold-out arena burst into pure euphoria! Chants of “David, David” echoed from the back while high pitched screams filled my ears from the front. It was in this atmosphere that last year’s “American Idol” runner-up began to sing.

There are few artists today that sing better live than on a recording and David Archuleta is one of them. His voice enveloped the huge arena and his high notes had me in a state of dazed puppy-dog admiration. He was emotionally connected to every song and seemed to burst with energy as he gave performance after performance with intensity and feeling.

I tend to use the word “amazing” when describing this talented singer, but my praise is no exaggeration. His performances were simply beautiful and perfection in its finest form.

My favorite song of the night was “Zero Gravity,” a fun dance track off a mini-album that he released last week. The performance was full of energy as David jumped up and down and got the whole audience involved. In previous concerts, I used to snicker at all the crazy fans that jumped up and down and sang along to each song, but now I was one of them… And I wasn’t ashamed, either!

The performance was also a standout due to a magical part when I swear David Archuleta pointed at me and my friends. Fittingly, the moment occurred on the verse “The world just disappears when you’re here.” David, if you are reading this: The feeling’s mutual.

Another standout was David’s cover of “Imagine” by John Lennon. Many may remember the performance of “Imagine” that David did as a contestant on the seventh season of “American Idol.” It was a performance that captivated the hearts of millions across America, including my own.

Watching his rendition of the song last night, it was amazing to see how far this artist had come from that moment on the “Idol” stage to last night. The once shy kid who sang “Imagine” over a year ago had transformed before my eyes into a confident, powerful, and professional performer. Seeing him come full circle was a special moment.

When he hit his final high note, the only thing I was sad about was the fact that it was ending so soon. I marveled as moms, teens, and middle-aged men alike rose from their seats in a standing ovation. It was a sea of humanity united by the amazing singing of an amazing person.

As I left the grandstands, I noticed that around me there was not a frown in sight. David’s ability to captivate us all that night was inspiring. There is something incredibly endearing about people like David who make each performance seem like their first.

If he can keep doing that, he will be a force in the music world for many years to come.
