Hi, David! Tell us a bit about yourself. What are you up to at the mo?
“I
guess I'd describe myself as an 18 year old who sings pop music! I'm
just an average teen who also has a new single out in the UK, called
Crush.”
What makes American Idol so special?
“It
gives people a chance to do something they love and to achieve things
they didn't think they could do. In auditions, most people end up
surprising themselves.”
What's been the funniest-ever audition?
“They
once showed a clip of people dressed up as the characters from Star
Trek and I thought that was random! It showed them talking and it was
just so weird!”
Which Idol winner would you duet with?
“Kelly
Clarkson was the first-ever winner and she motivated me to start
singing, so she'd be great! But then Jordin sparks is amazing, too.”
Who's your favourite judge and why?
“I
don't have one! They're all cool. Sometimes they have to give a strong
opinion but that doesn't make them evil, just honest! They all
motivated me in different ways and Simon Cowell the most, 'cause he
made me want to try harder all the time.”
What do the American viewers make of Simon?
“They either love him or love to hate him!”
This year's show has a brand new judge, singer-songwriter and record producer Kara DioGuardi. What do you think of her?
"She's
amazing. She has so much experience in songwriting and really
understands that side of music. I think she might be more like Simon
than like Paula Abdul, but I love that!”
Got any advice for this years hopeful?
“Don't
pay too much attention to the negative. There are always things you can
focus on and improve. Try to focus on the positive!”
Do you think Idols winners are better than winners of The X Factor, like Leona Lewis?
“We're
kind of different tastes. I think the UK is looking for a different
kind of winner to the USA. I think we're both in love with Leona Lewis,
though! She's incredible and, in person, she's so normal it's shocking!
I like British music, especially Natasha Bedingfield, too.”
How has Idol prepared you for stardom?
"It's
helped me to deal with the pressures of the business and the
multi-tasking it involves. You gain experience in the performing and
learning songs. Dealing with fans, too!”
Has the show changed your life?
"Yes,
it has, drastically. Without it, I wouldn't have a single or album out
and I wouldn't have learned so much. It's given me an opportunity to
share doing what I love to do with other people and it's just really
great, even though it's a lot of work!”
