Regular readers of this and other American Idol blogs probably have a pretty good idea of what's up with David Archuleta these days. But I think you'll enjoy USA TODAY reporter Marco Della Cava's piece on him anyway:
Fans of the precociously talented and perpetually giddy David Archuleta, Season 7’s teenage runner-up, will be happy to know that success hasn’t robbed the pride of Utah of his aw-shucks demeanor.
“I’m starting my tour Feb. 24 and I’m just so excited about it, really, it’s going to be really fun, nothing too fancy or big,” he says. “It starts in (Virginia Beach). I’ve never been to Virginia.”
Archuleta, 18, says that neither recording his first album (November’s David Archuleta, released on Jive) nor plotting a solo tour have caused him to shed his small-town ways. “I’m still the same old guy,” he says.
He admits he’ll need to improve his banter for the tour. “I’m not the best communicator,” he says, laughing. “I don’t make sense when I’m talking.”
Still in touch with Jason Castro and Brooke White, the three sometimes share their impressions of this year’s would-be Idols. “What sticks out with this group so far isn’t so much their voices but their crazy personalities,” he says. “It’s fun to watch. But it’s too painful to hear what the judges have to say.”
So what’s the worst part about climbing to the (near) top of the Idol heap? “It’s the screaming (fans), for sure,” says Archuleta. “Normally, when you hear that sort of scream, really high, there’s something really wrong happening. But instead, it’s just me walking by. I’m not used to that.”
